So for the 48 millionth time, I've started running again.
I quit running just after my last blog on here because the pain in my feet was getting so bad I didn't dare run at all til tonight. When I went to bed my feet hurt, when I got up they hurt just as bad, and during the day they hurt worse because I was on them all the time. If I didn't have plantar fasciitis before, I do now. So in the interest of not having to have my feet amputated or operated on in some fashion, I'm sad to say I've quit wearing my Fivefingers for the time being. I'm even sadder to say that it has helped my feet NOT to wear them. My feet still hurt of course... more during work of course because I'm on them and the shoes I wear are worn out in a bad way, but at least I can walk to work now. Thats about a mile give or take just a tad. And I can walk back too so considering walking around is what I do during work I think I'm doing pretty well. And thank God the pain when I wake up and first step on them has just about cut in half. I hate that all this amounts to not running. I've just been feeling so fat and gross lately. My attitude has been pretty good about all this though so there's some good news at least.
Tonight however, I couldn't stand it any more. I've been wanting to run, and started reading "Born to Run" for the 2nd time and that exacerbated things even more so I decided to do just a short run. You know. Breathe heavy for a bit cuz I'm out of shape, then shower and go to bed.
I gotta say it didn't go terribly well. My body was willing to go and do and was surprisingly able to (it felt like) resume almost normal distance even considering its been a month or so. My mind however was not in it. I tried to run without thinking. Just run. Let your feet do the talking. That worked for about .5 seconds, and after that the run was pretty much over. I was just over a block from my house and the run was over. No enjoyment, no relaxation. No feeling of contentment when the run was over, or an almost certainty of actually going to sleep quickly (for me) once I got back.
It's amazing how one little piece of information-incomplete though it is-can ruin everything. I'm a night person. My body operates in the wee hours of the morning. That's what it's always done. Thus I run at night. I LOVE to run at night. Everything is quiet and peaceful and no one is about. The entire world is different. I find a strange beauty in the parking lot lights of car dealerships. All the cars perfectly parked, waiting to be picked up; the cleanliness of the parking lot itself due to the lack of people... it sounds stupid when you say it, but it's why I love to walk on main street at night. It's not where I run, but it's something I love about the night.
But when the thought occurs to you that a body was found 2 blocks from your house, everything changes. The night is no longer beautiful. Suddenly every shadow is a danger spot. Every rustling bush is a ghost or some sort of demon laying in wait to have at you. Every dark area between street lights is an ambush where someone is waiting to murder you. It makes me sad. I don't even know if the body that was found WAS a murder or if it was a suicide or accidental death or what. Yet the night is ruined. Even though I took my dog with me. Don't hold me to this, but I'm pretty sure I've gone on the last of my midnight runs. I guess I'll have to start finding beauty in the day or something lol.
I do want to run. I want to lose this stupid gut once and for all, I want to get so damn addicted to running that I have to have my daily run or I can't function. I want to get my body in shape so my mind will follow suit. I want to have a sense of self for once.
I still need to find some sort of winter footwear that is waterproof. Turns out the Fivefinger Flows are NOT waterproof so for now I'm looking for alternatives. Who knows in the end though. I may just end up getting them and then only running on the days the roads are some kind of clear.
Alright that's it for now. I'm reading one more chapter of Born to Run and then I'm putting me and my fat gut to bed. Hopefully my running will continue. Maybe even with the Lady Disdain but I'm not counting on anything.

Update of Everything Else
In the interest of keeping these blogs kinda short, I decided to give you all an update on everything running in my life in a separate entry which hopefully won't be that long.
So here goes.
It is SO HARD to run with my feet and ankles relaxed! Which, if memory serves (and it may not), is the way I'm SUPPOSED to be running. I'm basing this on the theory that my body knows how it wants to move and therefore how to land its' own feet when it's running so if it's wrong, my body will slowly correct it until I'm running the right way. But as my feet DON'T hurt when I'm running, my guess is that I'm doing ok so far.
I think I need to go back to a chiropractor. My back is much improved from previous adjustments, and who knows how much or little from being minimalist in the shoe department, but I really feel like I have too much anterior pelvic tilt. Feels like I'm walking with my ass sticking out all the time. And not in a good way lol. I do actually have a back injury and have been told by chiropractors that it can be fixed, but they want me to come in 3 times a week for probably forever at $40 a time. I'm not that rich right now so I'm just being careful in the meantime. But I think finding a new chiropractor and getting adjustments at reasonable intervals is a good idea and would help me out quite a bit.
My feet hurt pretty much all the time now. I would give it a 3 out of 10 on the pain scale. Enough to notice but not enough to do anything about lol. It used to be my feet were fine as long as I didn't walk too far (less than a mile at a shot), but over the last 2 years I slowly built that up to where it's not TOO much of a problem. Now they hurt all the time. This COULD be my plantar fasciitis getting worse maybe (or may be my feet rebelling because they walk basically unprotected on tile all day at work and sidewalk and more tile at the grocery store when I'm OFF work), but I subscribe to the theory that my feet hurt because I'm wearing minimalist shoes and the pain is my feet getting stronger. :)
I'm surprise how easy it has been to become addicted to running. I'm not even doing it completely regularly yet. Intermittently, but usually at least twice a week. I think for about a month. Maybe a bit more. A good and healthy addiction. I'm also surprised tonights run went so well. I've been feeling kinda think physically and short of breath when I go up the 2 flights of stairs at work. But for some reason running was running and I'm happy for that.
I can feel my creativity slowly growing back. It's not quite ready to come out and play yet, but I remember how it felt when I was there all the time and it's a welcome feeling to recognize in myself again. It's also not entirely due to the running, but it sure doesn't hurt. I've heard some authors say they're more creative when they're healthy. Looks like I might be that way as well. :)
I'll probably think of 10 more things to say as soon as I post this, but for now I think that's all the updates I've got. Oh yeah. I gotta get my Fivefinger Flows ordered before winter gets here. I'm excited for that.
Happy Running!

My Burgeoning Addiction
I'm happy to say that it's pretty much official. I may in fact have an addiction on my hands!
All I wanted to do tonight is go for a walk. See I know I'm supposed to be taking it easy with this whole barefoot transition thing, but let's face it: I'm too excited and too impatient to do this any other than the way I'm doing it. Now Keeping in mind that I've got what is probably a mild case of Plantar Fasciitis, the process goes something like this:
I read a bit about barefooting life and everywhere says the same thing: "Transition SLOWLY. This way when your feet hurt (due to muscle development in the foot)you can go back to normal shoes and your feet will having the padding they're used to." Well in my mind, I've been barefoot my whole life. (Not entirely true.) I'm even known to some people BECAUSE of my barefootedness. (All true.) Therefore I should get to skip this step.
So I go for barefoot (or mainly my VFFs) for a long time no problem. Then my feet start to hurt. At which point I ignore the pain (which to be honest is a combination of I forget to put normal shoes on, and just plain refusal to put normal shoes on lol), and continue to be barefoot or VFFd until my feet hurt bad enough I don't dare go on walks for fear my feet will fall off and I'll never return.
But all I wanted to do was go for a walk tonight. I didn't want to push anything with said hurting feet. I just had that feeling that I needed to do something outside or I would go insane and die. So I thought to go for a walk. Even if it was a short one. But alas. I got as far as the driveway with my dog (who because she only goes out for runs with me at night now kept racing off down the driveway and turning around to see why I wasn't running along side her-funny!) and it was all over. My body yelled "RUN!!" and so I did. I ran to the drinking fountain by the Police Station and decided to walk for a bit in the name of not pushing it. Then I ran, then I walked, then I ran... Every time I ran, it was great! And every time I walked, it felt like there was this force kinda pushing on me from behind to GO FASTER! I tried to ignore this feeling but running just feels so good! Even though I don't run far and I don't run fast it's awesome!
So I'm going to go ahead and say I've got an addiction to running. Might be a small one, but that's how it all starts right?

Fat Old Man
When I run, I see a fat, tired old man. He doesn't move fast or well and appears as if he might drop dead at any time. His chest is puffed out like a bird attracting a mate and his skinny legs pound gracelessly as his hopefully relaxed feet slap the pavement.
I should probably stop looking at my shadow while I run.
I've gone running a good 3 or 4 times in this last week. My legs are still a bit sore when I'm done but not nearly as much since I managed to slow my pace. And when I say "legs," I mean calves. My thighs are apparently bulletproof. They never seem to get sore and the only time they get tired at all is when I'm running stairs or riding hard on a bicycle (the only way I seem to be able to ride one :) ).
Tonight I thought went particularly well until the home stretch. I managed to run the entire way with the exceptions of stopping twice for Hero to eliminate. But by the time I got to said home stretch I was ready to die. I realize of course that part of threatening to become an ultra-runner is increasing the length of the course your run, but shouldn't I be able to run the length of the course which is at this point not more than 1.5 miles (my guess) without stopping to walk or dying? I'm just impatient I think. I want to be able to run 50 miles at a shot RIGHT NOW without having to do the work to get there. I want to be able to run and enjoy it without wondering if my right hip is going to fall out of the socket and leave me on the side of the road to die.
Hero still isn't keeping up with me even though I'm "running" at a speed that I figure is on par with (or maybe SLIGHTLY faster) than the speed at which Hero would naturally migrate. So I'm sticking to my theory that she is in fact NOT a border collie at all, but something else entirely. I'm still working on what she is but I'll let you know when I figure it out.
I'm giving up for now. I've been writing for at least an hour it seems, but the Lady Disdain is watching Little Women and it's pretty seriously distracting. So...
I'm done. I went running. The End.

Been A Long Time, I'll do better
Been A Long Time, Been A Long Time...
Seems like that should be a song... Maybe it is...
Anyway, the title says it all and I want you all to know (all 1 of you who read this) that I have failed you terribly. I haven't been running every time or even half the time when I'm mad and I really need to get on that. In my own defense I haven't been mad half as much since changing living arrangements, but still I have no excuse for not running like I should have been and therefore I offer none.
There's good news though. I just got back from a run. It wasn't bad really. I seem to have found a good pace that's slower and more consistent than the pace my legs WANT to go and after about a 3 block warm up, I can go the rest of the distance of my run without walking. Admittedly it's not a long run but we have to start somewhere I guess.
I realized the other day that I went on forever about wanting to get Vibram Fivefingers, but once I got them I stopped talking about them completely lol. So here's the deal:
THEY ARE AWESOME!! They're not EXACTLY like being barefoot, but it's close enough. They're incredibly comfortable. I've heard several people say that having their toes in "individual compartments" would drive them crazy. Well too bad for you cuz it doesn't bug me. I realize you all know this but I would really rather die than wear regular shoes ever again.
I did my research and read up on the proper break-in for both the 5fingers AND my feet-which stated that when I first get them I should only wear them for a few hours at a time until my feet get used to supporting themselves and then gradually wear them for longer- and promptly put them on and wore them for I think it was right around the 11-days-straight-day-in-day-out mark when my feet started hurting for the first time. So to remedy this, the next day at work I wore my regular work shoes (old and very worn out -but in a bad way- New Balance running shoes) and the day after that I was back in my 5fingers. That was a good month and a half ago, and I haven't worn normal shoes for more than a couple of hours at a shot since then.
Now when my feet start to hurt (and I REALLY think it's because I work all day on tile floors -and that will make ANYONE's feet hurt), I think to myself, "I should probably switch to my work shoes now and promptly forget and keep right on wearing my 5fingers.
I found that as comfortable as they are, if you soak them in water while you're wearing them (like in a stream at the park :) ) they mold to your feet and feel even more comfortable than before.
Yes they were expensive, and I hope they last a long time, but to me they are easily worth the price I paid for them. Now with winter coming on I'm going to order a model called "Flows" which are designed with colder temperatures in mind so I don't have to wear shoes during the cold months either. I really wish I could find a pair of "Surges" which were sort of like the Flows but came up to the top of your ankle. But they don't make that model any more for whatever reason.
I hear you can wear toe socks with 5fingers but as I HATE SOCKS, I can't see why you'd want to. My 5fingers keep my feet warm when it's cooler outside and have done just fine in the heat as well. My feet are easy sweaters whenever they are enclosed in ANYTHING (seriously my feet never smell when I'm straight barefoot), but that is the only downside I've found so far.
So in case I wax too long as usual, let's recap:
*5Fingers are awesome.
*You should break yours in the right way even though I didn't
*I think everyone should wear them
*They are well worth their price and are cheaper than a lot of "good" running shoes
*I will never wear normal shoes again
*I need to run more
*I hate socks.
*Sadly my 5fingers get more attention than I do, but they probably deserve it more
I think that's about it. I'm sure there's all kinds of things I've forgotten to include that you wanted to know, but if so just leave a comment (yes you can do that even though you don't have an account) or shoot me an email or a FB message.
So in further conclusion, I'm thinking about going insane and running twice per day. I have lots of energy after my run a bit ago, but we'll just see how it goes I think.

Ok. Been a long whatever it's been.
I've been having some kind of sinus draining issues which made it really hard to breathe, let alone run. So basically I get to start over. Swell.
The good news is, even though my body is off a bit still--which is most likely because the air here isn't actually breatheable--I'm going to start running again as of tomorrow. Or today. However you choose to look at it.
I may or may not be completely ready, but I'm going ahead anyway. If my problem is lymph stuckage like my Master Herbalist says it is, what better way to get it moving even better than by running?!
And speaking of running, I walked over to Steven's tonight, and by the time I got to the end of my street, my body almost started running with no command from me! So I'm taking that as a sign that even if my body isn't 100%, it doesn't care. It wants to get going.
Therefore... Lungs be damned, full steam ahead.

Didn't get any of my running done today.
Intended to get up at about 1230 (I go to bed late) and take care of dog stuff and run which is the usual idea. Today however, I set my alarm... and sure enough it went off... but for some stupid reason the alarm volume was turned down or off so I didn't hear it. I've done that several times of late. You'd think I would learn but apparently not.
I've got some kind of throat thing going on that started suddenly around 1130pm but I just took it as my throat hurting from not being used to singing as well as some allergy stuff I've had going on. During my shower it started feeling worse. I'm hoping for drainage rather than sickage, but as of right now it's going to be business as usual tomorrow. Maybe I'll run an extra time or something to make up for not running today.
When I can get my legs to listen to good advice and GO SLOW I do a whole lot better as far as how far I get before I run out of air. In "Born to Run" it says something along the lines of "Run at a pace that allows you to talk." So when I do that it works. Sadly this usually only works when I run with my lady (which is only about half the time right now), but I figure I'll get better at this due to the fact that I can't get worse! :)
In finishing, because I need to hear it again, I want to repeat to myself what the guy in "Born to Run" said: "Think easy, light, smooth, and fast. You start with easy, because if that's all you get, that's not so bad. Then work on light. Make it effortless, like you don't give a shit how high the hill is or how far you've got to go. When you've practised that so long that you forget you're practicing, you work on making it smoooooooth. You won't have to worry about the last one-you get those three, and you'll be fast."

So far, so bad. Turns out I suck at staying updating. Which we already knew. So...
Today I ran around TWO blocks not just one.
I know it's sad, and I know it sucks, but everyone says "Go slow," and that's about all I can do right now. Much more out of shape that I had originally supposed. I knew I was getting soft, but holy crap! Around the block?!
It's fine. I'll get there. 1 block at a time apparently.

Coming Soon to Some Jacked Up Feet Near You
So I've decided to give in to the urge I've had my entire life though I never knew the word for it. I've decided to become an Ultra-Runner.
Maybe I should back up. Never in my life (until I started playing music) did I love anything in this world so much as running and being barefoot. The barefoot I learned from my mother, but the running... I can't really explain it, the love of it has always been there. My only dream as a child was to be an Olympic runner.
You can see to look at me that it's pretty obvious that I have not, in fact, been running all these years. But always in the back of my mind the thought and desire have been there-even through everything I've done and been through that have attempted desperately to squash said love and desire.
Now through books and some research (most of which was done by... not me at this point) I'm coming to find out that the best way to run-the HEALTHIEST way to run to gain what I will call a natural muscular strength is to run...BAREFOOT.
Kill me now, my dreams have been fulfilled.
Yes there are those of you out there who don't buy it, but that's fine. I don't require you to. If I've piqued your interested however, just follow along with my madness here, and we'll all see what happens with my injured back and TWO feet with plantar fasciitis.
I'm tired of being tired, I'm tired of having a gut, and I'm tired of being unheathy both physically and mentally. So I've decided to do something about it.
And to prove how serious I am, I'm going to start 2 days ago. In January. I can't run barefoot right now, but I WILL run. I'll show you all. When I get dollars, I plan on getting some Vibram Five Fingers and eventually I will run barefoot. But first things first. I'm going to keep running. And I'm not going to stop.
